There was barely a flicker on the touchline as the decisive goal ripped into Everton’s net. While one corner of the Bullens Road stand erupted and a posse of players in black shirts engulfed Shinji Okazaki, Claudio Ranieri stood with his arms behind his back.
The magnitude of that strike, though, would not have been lost on the Italian. Not only did it crush Everton’s resistance and secure another victory, it was the goal that ensured Leicester City will spend Christmas Day looking down on the rest of the Barclays Premier League.
Ranieri might have been reluctant to get caught up in the celebrations, but Leicester deserve every bit of praise that has come their way and, given where they were on this day 12 months ago – welded to the bottom – they deserve to revel in the moment.
