Kamaru Usman (17-1) defeated fan favourite Jorge Masvidal (35-14) in the main event of UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island’ on Saturday.
Kamaru Usman defeated Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46) to retain the UFC Welterweight Championship. It was Usman‘s 12th straight win in the UFC, tying Georges St-Pierre’s record for longest welterweight win streak.
Masvidal took the fight on six days’ notice after original contender Gilbert Burns was forced off the card with coronavirus, and ‘Gamebred’s energy reserve was clearly compromised as a result. The challenger pushed a frenetic pace in the first round, mixing up his striking and testing the champion, but Masvidal faded as Kamaru Usman wore him out against the cage over the course of the five-round fight.
