It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which ran up at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper.

Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene. It was not immediately clear if anyone was wounded in the blaze.

Pictures and videos have sprung up all over social media depicting the fire as it grew.

No fireworks have been detonated in the city yet, and so the cause of the fire is unknown. The Address hotel is 991 feet tall, is the sixth-tallest building in the city, and the 36th-tallest in the world.

Local media say the hotel and the nearby Dubai Mall have been evacuated.

There are currently at least four squads dealing with the blaze. The fire should be under countrol within 30 minutes, the Government of Dubai Media Office tweeted (in Arabic)

It said the fire started on the 20th floor. The cause is currently unknown.

Although the hotel is next to the city’s fireworks celebrations, no fireworks had been set off.
